Russian Bronze Icon
With Two Selected Saints
Dimensions: 4.8 x 5 cm
Period: late 18th - early 19th century
This portative traveller icon with the depiction of two full length figures of saints is made in casted and finely incised bronze. It has raised final in the middle of the upper rim with the representation of Christ’s image not made by hand. The pair of pintle hinge loops projects from each side of the icon indicating that originally it used to be a central plate of a triptych. Alongside the rims there is a finely hatched border enclosing the two figures against the back-ground pattern consisting of horizontal lines and dots. This type of textured background provided a good base for enamel. Cyrillic inscriptions above the heads of the saints indicate their identity.
According to the style and manufacturing technique the icon can be dated in the late 18th or early 19th century.
