Russian Brass and Enamel Icon
Material: brass and polychrome enamel
Dimensions: 11.5 x 10. cm
Period: 19th century
This is a fine example of Russian metal traveller’s icon with a depiction of Saint Nifont rendered as the half-length figure in low relief. It is a larger size variant of this type of icons which are usually of smaller dimensions. The icon is made in casted and incised brass with celeste blue enamel applied on the background of the border. The borders are elaborately decorated with naturalistically rendered grapevine .
According to the style and manufacturing technique the icon can be dated in second half of the 19th century.
